This large painting (160x115 cm); reflects my view of contemporary society. A world in which people are easily distracted, influenced and sometimes willingly deceived. I often say: give them bread and games, and everything remains calm.

In this work I used many symbolic elements.
The lollypop represents how people are kept satisfied with small pleasures-give them candy and they stay quiet.
The chains and the sharp almost masochistic collar symbolize how we allow ourselves to become tied to systems.
The Sinterklaas ring revers to believing in stories and illusions like fairy tales we perhaps should have outgrown.
The papal hat with a third eye represents power and surveillance, we watch you. At the same time flowers grow out of the hat, raising the question of faith of paradise.
The butterflies symbolize freedom-something we all long for.
The sunglasses represent the opposite, choosing not to see what really happening.

With this painting I ask questions about freedom, belief, power and how easily people can be distracted.

After all is this a colorful painting, which kept you looking.

In dit werk heb ik veel symbolen verwerkt. De lollie staat voor het zoet houden van mensen: geef ze snoep en ze blijven stil. de kettingen en de scherpe, bijna masochistische halsband verwijzen naar hoe wij onszelf laten vastzetten in systemen en verwachtingen.

De ring van Sinterklaas verwijst naar het blijven geloven in verhalen en illusies. Net als sprookjes die we misschien allang ontgroeid moeten zijn.

De paushoed met een derde oog symboliseert macht en controle-we watch you. Tegelijk groeien er bloemen uit de hoed: een vraag over geloof, hoop en het idee van een paradijs.

De vlinders staan voor vrijheid. Iets waar we allemaal naar verlangen.
En de zonnebril staat voor het tegenovergestelde: het niet willen zien van wat er werkelijk gebeurt.

Met dit schilderij stel ik vragen.
Over vrijheid, geloof, macht en over hoe makkelijk mensen zich laten afleiden.
